There is little information about the storage of vegetations root biomass in the world, and there are even less regional estimations. From the quantitative point of view, few is known when it comes to changes in the use and the cover of the soil on the root biomass. The goals of this study were to determinate the proportion of roots below the stem bases, to estimate the root biomass per unit area, to estimate the aboveground biomass and the root: shoot ratio in the areas of caatinga and to measure the stock of root biomass of the native vegetation, cultivations and pasturages, in the main physiographic and classes of soil of Pernambuco. Two studies about root biomass were made: one about biomass below the stems in a caatinga vegetation and the other about biomasses in areas underneath different uses and types of soils. In the first, aboveground biomasses were estimated using the allometric equation, root biomass were collected in trenches of 0.5 × 0.5 m², opened under the stems bases and in different distancies between the stems, separating in 20 cm of depth soil layers until the depth of 1m or until an impediment layer was found. The root biomass under the stems bases was 10.6 Mg ha-1 and in the other positions was 25.6 Mg ha-1 concentrated in the superficial layer of the soil (0-20 cm). The proportion of 41% of the roots founded underneath the stems biomass confirms the hypothesis that the storage of root biomass has been systematically underestimated in areas that don’t quantify the roots in this position. In the second study, the roots in the areas of agriculture, pasture, dense vegetation and opened vegetation were determined, in different physiographic regions of Pernambuco (Zona da Mata, humid; Agreste, sub-humid and Sertão, semiarid), in trenches of 0.7 × 0.7 m, in layers of until 1m, in the main classes of soil of every region. The roots were separated in fine (≤ 5 mm) and coarse (> 5 mm), and then dry and weighted up. In the humid region, the biomass at the dense vegetation (32.5 Mg ha-1) and open vegetaion (24.0 Mg ha-1) were significantly bigger then in the areas with cana-de-açúcar (9.8 Mg ha-1) and pasture (2,6 Mg ha-1). In the region sub-humid the root biomass of the dense vegetation (20.5 Mg ha-1) were approximately nine times superior then the pasture (2.3 Mg ha-1). In the semiarid region, in the soils of both west and east Sertão, the biggest root biomass were in the dense vegetation (17.1 e 13.2 Mg ha-1 respectively). The root biomasses in the areas of pasture did not show any difference between the regions. Regardless of the region, the majority of the root biomass were in the 0-40 cm layer and it was composed by coarse roots; only in the areas of pasture there was a predominance of fine roots. The higher concetration of root biomass in the areas of native vegetation then in the areas of pasture and agriculture showed that the substitution of the native vegetation leads to the loss of the biomass stock.eng
